What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a holistic, non-invasive healthcare profession focused on diagnosing and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic is the third largest primary health profession in the United States, with chiropractors treating approximately 35 million Americans annually.

One of the greatest benefits of chiropractic care is that it offers a drug-free, natural approach to improving your health. Chiropractic treatment has been shown to help with:

  • Back pain & neck pain
  • Joint pain & arthritis
  • Muscle injuries & soft tissue damage
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Sciatica & nerve pain
  • Posture issues & scoliosis
  • Asthma & blood pressure
  • Pregnancy-related pain
  • Ear infections & colic in children

The Science Behind Chiropractic Care

Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. The spine provides structure and protects the vital nerves that travel from your brain through your spinal cord and out to the rest of your body.

When one or more vertebrae shift out of proper alignment — a condition called a spinal subluxation — it can cause pain, inflammation, and nerve interference that affects your overall health and function. At Crest Chiropractic, we carefully examine the health of your spine and apply gentle, precise chiropractic adjustments to correct misalignments, relieve nerve pressure, and restore your body's natural ability to heal.

Chiropractic Techniques We Use

We use a variety of chiropractic adjusting techniques tailored to each patient's unique needs, comfort level, and condition.

  • Diversified Technique — The most widely used hands-on chiropractic adjustment. This technique uses a quick, precise thrust to restore proper joint motion and spinal alignment. Patients often hear an audible popping sound called joint cavitation — a harmless release of gas bubbles from the joint capsule.
  • Thompson Technique — A lower-force adjusting method that uses a specialized drop table with a built-in drop mechanism to assist the adjustment. This technique is ideal for patients who prefer a gentler approach with less force.
  • Activator Method — A very gentle, instrument-assisted technique using a small, hand-held spring-loaded device to deliver a precise, low-force adjustment. The high-speed thrust is too quick for muscles to resist, making it highly effective and comfortable — especially for patients who are hesitant about manual adjustments or require a less forceful technique.

Chiropractic Care for the Spine, Hips, Jaw, Shoulders, Elbows, Knees, Ankles and Feet

At Crest Chiropractic, we treat more than just spine related conditions. We are trained in assessing and treating extremity joint dysfunction throughout the entire body, including:

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
  • Shoulder & elbow
  • Wrist & hand
  • Hip & knee
  • Ankle & foot
  • Rib joints

This whole-body approach ensures that every joint and muscle system is properly aligned and working in harmony — so you can move and feel your best.

Orem Chiropractic FAQ

What makes your chiropractic treatment different than other clinics in Orem?

At Crest Chiropractic we use hands on techniques of stretching and muscle work to relieve tight muscles and specific adjustments to improve spinal alignment and mobility. This process allows us to give comfortable care and also address muscle imbalances within the spine. When appropriate we may also use shockwave therapy or non-surgical spinal decompression.

What happens during my first chiropractic appointment?

Your first visit at our Orem chiropractic clinic will consist of a consultation, examination, X-rays (if-necessary) and your first treatment (if indicated). This means Dr. Mattila will go over your health concerns and questions, give you a explanation of the problem, and give you your first chiropractic treatment. If your issue is not related to what we are able to treat then Dr. Mattila will give you a referral to another provider.

How long are chiropractic appointments at your clinic?

New patient appointments can take 30 minutes and sometimes longer. Follow up appointments can range from 10-20 minutes depending on the complexity of your case.

Do you combine muscle and soft tissue therapy with chiropractic adjustments?

Yes, we like to use stretches and muscle release techniques to get the muscles relaxed and ready for the chiropractic treatment. Some of these techniques are trap and stretch, post isometric relaxation stretching, myofascial cupping and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization. We find this allows us to help you get better faster.

Do you provide pregnancy chiropractic treatment?

Yes, we do provide pregnancy chiropractic care. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can improve pelvic and spinal alignment, decrease pain naturally, and help with a healthier pregnancy. We have chiropractic tables that allow space for the belly so that a pregnant patient can lay face down on the table. If that is uncomfortable we have techniques that allow us to provide care while laying on your side or back.

Can I receive chiropractic care even if I am not in a lot of pain?

Yes, we recommend chiropractic care for you even if you are not in a lot of pain. We see a lot of patients that have stiffness, tightness, mild pain, mild discomfort and posture issues that benefit from chiropractic care. We find that being proactive and starting care early can decrease the chances of letting a small problem turn into a large problem.

Do I have to keep getting chiropractic care after my pain is gone?

No, you do not need to keep getting chiropractic care after your pain is gone. If your goal is pain relief, once the pain is gone you do not need to receive any more chiropractic care. If your goal is to correct the underlying problem that is causing your pain, such as an injured disc or joint, care may be necessary beyond the pain phase. You get to choose what is best for you.
