What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic Care in Orem, Utah

At Crest Chiropractic, we provide safe and effective chiropractic care to help you move better, feel stronger, and do more of what you love pain-free. Chiropractic care is a holistic, non-invasive health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system and the effects of these disorders on general health. According to the American Chiropractic Association chiropractic is the third largest primary health profession and chiropractors treat about 35 million Americans annually. A large benefit to receiving chiropractic adjustments is that they are a drug free way to improving your health naturally.  Other chiropractic benefits include helping the body improve or recover from back pain, neck pain, joint pain and arthritis, muscle injuries, headaches, scoliosis and posture issues, asthma, blood pressure, pregnancy pain, ear infections, colic and more.

The Science Behind Chiropractic Care

It is your nervous system that controls every cell and organ in your body. The spine is there to give your body structure and protect the important nerves that travel from your brain, through your spine, and out to the body. We closely examine the health of the spine and check to see if the vertebrae (spinal bones) are in proper alignment. If any vertebrae shift out of their proper alignment this can result in pain, symptoms and pressure on nerves leading to nerve interference. To correct misaligned vertebrae, we apply a gentle force to the vertebrae in a specific direction, this is called a chiropractic adjustment.

The Art of Chiropractic Care

We use a variety of chiropractic adjusting techniques in our practice. Some common techniques we use are traditional hands-on adjusting called Diversified technique. This technique works well for many individuals especially those that like a quicker and faster stretch during the adjustment. Commonly you will hear an audible ‘pop’ sound during this adjustment. This ‘popping’ sound is called a cavitation, it comes from a small amount of gas bubbles that get released from the joint capsule during the adjustment. Another technique we use is called Thompson Technique. This technique works well for those who prefer lower force techniques. We use a special table that has a ‘drop mechanism’ built into the table that drops down to assist adjustments. Typically an audible ‘pop’ is not heard during these adjustments. A very gentle technique that we may use is called the Activator. With the Activator Method we use a small, hand-held, spring-loaded device to give a precise, low-force adjustment. It is designed to give the effects of a manual adjustment by using a high-speed thrust that is too quick for muscles to resist. We use this gentle, instrument-assisted approach for patients who are hesitant about traditional manual adjustments or who require a less forceful technique.

We are also trained in assessing and treating extremity joint misalignments, including the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), shoulder, rib, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot. This comprehensive approach ensures your entire body, not just your spine, is aligned and working in harmony.

At Crest Chiropractic, we customize our care based upon the unique needs of each individual patient. We like to use the technique that will work best for your condition, and if you have a specific technique preference we always want to know about that. We do our very best to accommodate our patients technique preferences to give them the best, most comfortable care. Our top priority is understanding and meeting your goals, relieving your pain, and addressing the root cause of your condition.
