Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Pain

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot pain and heel pain, affecting more than 2 million people in the U.S. each year. At our clinic in Orem, Utah, we provide expert care to help athletes and adults recover from this often debilitating condition using advanced, non-surgical methods—including shockwave therapy, chiropractic care and custom orthotics.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that stretches from your heel to the ball of your foot. It supports the arch and absorbs shock during walking, running, or jumping. Overuse, small tears, or inflammation of this tissue can result in plantar fasciitis, a painful condition that can worsen over time if left untreated.

Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

-Repetitive strain or overuse from running, jumping, or prolonged standing

-Flat feet or fallen arches

-Weight gain or pregnancy

-Poor footwear or walking barefoot frequently

-Compensation such as: tight calf muscles, overactive hamstrings, or weak gluteal muscles

Symptoms to Watch For

If you're experiencing sharp or stabbing heel pain, especially during your first steps in the morning or after periods of rest, you may have plantar fasciitis. Additional symptoms may include:

-Burning or aching pain across the bottom of the foot

-Pain that decreases during activity but returns after rest

-Sensation of "walking on broken glass"

Our Evaluation in Orem Includes

-Foot and ankle alignment analysis

-Evaluation of foot arches (flat feet, collapsed arches, over pronation, over supination)

-Lower extremity muscle testing for weakness or compensation

-Spinal alignment check, posture check and gait analysis

At Home Care Options

-Icing the bottom of the foot to reduce inflammation and foot pain

-Night splints to keep the foot flexed while sleeping

-Stretching the foot, calf, and hamstring muscles

-Wearing supportive footwear and avoid walking barefoot on hard floors

Our Treatment Options for Plantar Fasciitis

  1. Shockwave therapy - extracorporeal shockwave therapy uses acoustic sound waves to promote healing and tissue regeneration. This non-invasive treatment helps to increase circulation, stimulate collagen production, breakdown scar tissue, and relieve pain and medication without surgery.
  2. Chiropractic foot and ankle adjustments - adjustments can restore proper joint alignment and mobility in the foot and ankle, helping reduce strain on the plantar fascia.
  3. Custom orthotics - for patients with flat feet or overpronation, we offer Foot Levelers custom orthotics. These orthotics support ALL three foot arches, are comfortable and help reduce stress on the plantar fascia by properly supporting the foot.
  4. Kinesiology taping - strategically applied tape to the medial arch and bottom of the foot can offload pressure on the plantar fascia and reduce pain. This is a great tool that can easily be applied for additional relief during recovery.
